Without seeing one frame of Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City,” people were already predicting two things. 1) The film is going to be quirky as hell (duh). And 2) The new film is going to premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. With a summer release date and Anderson’s track record, it just seemed as if a no-brainer for “Asteroid City” to hit Cannes. And now, it seems as if that is confirmed.
According to Deadline, on the day before the first trailer for the film is expected to arrive, Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City” is going to Cannes to play at the prestigious event. Again, this is hardly shocking, as the filmmaker’s previous film, “The French Dispatch,” played in-competition at the event, as well as the 2012 feature, “Moonrise Kingdom.” Anderson’s brand of filmmaking fits perfectly with the Cannes organization. Not much is known about the film other than the very basics. The film takes place in Asteroid City in 1955 and focuses on a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention.
Much like Wes Anderson’s more recent films, the cast for “Asteroid City” is ridiculously stacked and very well might be the selling feature for the film. The cast includes Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Stephen Park, Rupert Friend, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon, Hong Chau, Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie, Tony Revolori, Jake Ryan, and Jeff Goldblum. This is insane, right?
“Asteroid City,” as mentioned, is expected to debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival before hitting theaters on June 16. You can see the new poster for the film below.
Here’s the synopsis:
ASTEROID CITY takes place in a fictional American desert town circa 1955. The itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention (organized to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition) is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events.
