Got a Tip?

‘Atypical’ Season 2 Trailer: Netflix’s Coming of Age Comedy Returns September 7

It’s time to get “Atypical” again Educating the public at large about the autism spectrum is an incredibly important issue, and breaking down stereotypes and promoting the reality of autism is incredibly important for improving the well being of all who are affected by the disorder. Media representations can certainly help in this regard, and shows like “Sesame Street” and, yes, “Young Sheldon” have made great strides in representing autism in a realistic way to a mainstream audience.

That’s why it’s a shame that Netflix didn’t quite live up to this charge with their show “Atypical” (which our own Elazar Fine called “the worst thing Netflix has ever done”). The show was praised for its authentic portrayal of autism, thanks to a winning performance by Keir Gilchrist (who has yet to top his breakout turn in “It Follows”), but the first season was criticized for its pacing, tonal inconsistencies, and unrealistic depictions of women. Despite these problems, the show was evidently popular – as far as we can tell, given that Netflix doesn’t release their metrics – enough for a second season, which Netflix announced (via a cute penguin video) is set to premiere on September 7.

The official synopsis can be read below.

“Atypical” is a coming of age story that follows Sam, an 18-year-old on the autistic spectrum as he searches for love and independence. While Sam is on his funny and emotional journey of self-discovery, the rest of his family must grapple with a change in their own lives as they all struggle with the central theme: what does it really mean to be normal?

Returning alongside Gilchrist for the second season is Jennifer Jason Leigh, who plays Sam’s overbearing mother, Michael Rapaport, playing Sam’s befuddled dad, Brigette Lundy-Paine as Sam’s sister, and Amy Okuda as a therapist.

You can catch the new season of “Atypical” on Netflix starting September 7.
