"Avengers: Infinity War" Fastest Ever To Reach $1 Billion

It’s weekend #2 for “Avengers: Infinity War,’ and as expected, Thanos has been busy collecting some more milestones for Marvel Studios.

Obviously, in its second weekend, ‘Infinity War’ easily crushed the competition for another #1 showing with $112.5 million in three days, and $450.8 million overall domestically. That’s good enough for the second-best second weekend in history. With only a -56% drop, ‘Infinity War’ finished behind “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which scored a second weekend total of $149 million. But the real story this weekend is the global record that Marvel Studios can claim.

There are now 34 films in history to gross over $1 billion worldwide, and “Avengers: Infinity War” is the fastest ever to reach the number. Crossing the milestone in only 11 days (on Saturday), ‘Infinity War’ broke the speed record to $1 billion previously held by ‘The Force Awakens’ (12 days). Of the 34 films that now have over $1 billion worldwide, Marvel Studios accounts for 6 of them, with Disney releasing an astonishing 17.

Speaking of Disney, the record-breaking numbers put up by ‘Infinity War,’ combined with “Black Panther,” have put the Mouse House up above $3 billion in global ticket sales faster than any studio in history. Disney accomplished this feat on May 4, which beats their own record from May 6, 2016.

After 10 days, the superhero epic is now the #15 film of all-time at the worldwide box office. As previously mentioned, the $1.16 billion gross of ‘Infinity War’ gives Marvel Studios its 5th highest grossing film, so far. That means that through 10 days, the ‘Avengers’ film has eclipsed the total earnings of some previous Marvel Studios heavyweights like “Captain America: Civil War” ($1.15 billion), “Spider-Man: Homecoming” ($880 million), “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” ($863 million), and “Thor: Ragnarok” ($854 million). Honestly, we could write thousands of words about the milestones that this film is already reaching.

By next weekend, there’s no telling where the film will finish globally. “Avengers: Infinity War” will finally see its release in China on May 11, which is sure to propel next weekend’s totals a lot higher. This time next week, we’ll probably report about ‘Infinity War’ getting close to the Top 5 grossing films of all time.

Even though you might not have realized it, three films actually opened wide this weekend, attempting to play the counterprogramming card against Marvel Studios. The leader among the three was “Overboard,” with a weekend gross of $14.75 million, good enough for a #2 showing.

The remake of the classic(?) ‘80s film was attempting to capitalize on the Latin market, by casting “How to be a Latin Lover” and “Instructions Not Included” star Eugenio Derbez. The weekend is a pretty good start for the film, but it’ll face some stiff competition next weekend when Melissa McCarthy’sLife of the Party” opens and takes over the comedy landscape.

Other than “Overboard,” the biggest opening weekend standout was Jason Reitman’sTully,” which opened with a $3.2 million three-day total, good for a #6 weekend position. The Diablo Cody-penned film opened a little lower than estimates and is going to struggle to keep its hold on theater screens in the next couple weeks. The only other major film opening this weekend was Dean Devlin’sBad Samaritan,” which barely registered at all, finishing at the bottom of the top 10 with a weak opening of only $1.6 million. Yeah, that’s not good.

The rest of the top 10 are the same films we’ve been discussing for the last month. “A Quiet Place” is still chugging along with another $7.6 million ($160 million overall). “Rampage” is still probably not going to hit $100 million, with a weak fourth weekend of $4.6 million ($84.7 million overall). And “Black Panther” is still in the top 10, in its 12th weekend, with $3.15 million and $693 million domestically. Obviously, Disney is keeping the film in theaters to reach that magical $700 million mark, as the film hits home release this week.
