Got a Tip?

‘Avengers: Kang Dynasty’: Marvel Hires ‘Loki’ Creator Michael Waldron To Pen The 5th Avengers Epic

When Marvel finds a writer or filmmaker they like, particularly Kevin Feige, the studio tends to hang on to them. And perhaps recently, no one in the current Marvel Studios bullpen has done more repeat business with Marvel Studios with writer/producer Michael Waldron. To that end, the screenwriter has been tapped to write “Avengers: Kang Dynasty,” which will be the fifth installment of the ‘Avengers’ franchise.

The hiring of Waldron signals perhaps a change in direction for the film as ‘Kang Dynasty’ director Destin Daniel Cretton decided to bow out of the film to spend more time developing some of his other Marvel projects, the “Wonder Man” series and a “Shang-Chi” sequel. Marvel is still looking for a replacement director, with many wild rumors hitting the internet, like Sam Raimi.

Writer Jeff Loveness, who wrote “Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania,” was initially hired to write ‘Kang Dynasty’ but has since moved on. Waldron will want to put his stamp on the film, plus he’ll be back in good company with Kang, the character he first introduced into the MCU with “Loki” (Waldron and Loveness both come from Dan Harmon’s time-travel animated series “Rick and Morty” which Feige loves).

Waldron has done a ton of work for Marvel and Feige. First, he was the creator and head writer on “Loki” season one, and his work was so loved he was quickly hired to write “Doctor Strange And The Multiverse Of Madness” after that film lost its original director, Scott Derrickson.

Feige, seemingly loving the collaboration so much, hired Waldron to write a “Star Wars” movie based on an idea that the Marvel boss had (it’s since seemed to go belly up, but one wonders if that’s Feige just wanting to develop that film in peace).

Finally, Waldron is already writing “Avengers: Secret Wars,” the sequel that follows ‘Kang Dynasty’ so it makes perfect sense that he would write both (like the way Markus and McFeely both wrote the ‘Infinity War/Endgame’ back-to-back ‘Avengers’ films for the Russo Brothers.

‘Kang Dynasty’ is currently set for May 1, 2026, giving Waldron ample time to write it and give Marvel time to find a new director. “Avengers: Secret Wars” will follow on May 7, 2027, concluding Phase 6 and the Multiverse saga for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
