‘Ali & Ava’ Trailer: Clio Barnard’s Romantic Cannes Drama Finally Hits The U.S. In July

The 2022 Cannes Film Festival is finally here, and with the event comes many premiers of extraordinary talent. Movies like “Decision To Leave” by Park Chan-Wook or documentaries like “Moonage Daydream” by Brett Morgen have premiered at the event, already sparking good reviews.

Another movie to come from the Cannes Film Festival, albeit from Cannes 2021, is “Ali & Ava, directed by Clio Barnard. The British director is known for her work on “The Essex Serpent” (2022) and her previous Cannes drama “The Selfish Giant” (2013).

“Ali & Ava” will be produced by Tracy O’Riodran, who worked with Barnard on the “The Selfish Giant.” As well as directing the feature, Clio Barnard also wrote the movie, along with executive producers Will Clarke, Lizzie Francke, Rose Garnett, and Claudia Yusef.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Ali is an exuberant music enthusiast struggling to keep his recent separation from his wife a secret from his family. Ava is a pragmatic middle-aged teaching assistant and matriarch to a large and close-knit family. When a chance encounter unites them, Ali and Ava begin a tentative friendship formed around their shared love of music that quickly blossoms into an unexpected romance.

The movie will star Adeel Akhtar as Ali and Claire Rushbrook as Ava. Akhtar has starred in shows like “Killing Eve” (2019) and “Stranger Things” (2010). Akhtar is also set to star in the upcoming Sequel to Netflix’s “Enola Holmes.” 

Claire Rushbrook has appeared in big-budget movies like “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and “Spice World.” Rushbrook is typically seen in British shows like “No Offense” and “Whitechapel,” but fans may also recognize her from her role in the popular sci-fi show “Doctor Who.”

Here’s the full cast: Claire Rushbrook, Adeel Akhtar, Ellora Torchia, Vinny Dhillon, Shaun Thomas, Natalie Gavin, Mona Goodwin, Krupa Pattani, Macy Shackleton, and Ariana Bodorova. “Ali & Ava” will be released by Greenwich Entertainment in theaters on July, 29, 2022, followed by a release on Amazon and Apple TV on August 23, 2022.
