A few weeks ago reports surfaced that despite the colossal clusterfuck that was “The Wolfman,” Universal was pressing ahead with another stab at the monster movie genre. Instead of a sequel however, Michael Tabb has reportedly written a script that is being tossed around under the title of “Werewolf,” and shares a link to George Waggner‘s 1941 film “The Wolf Man,” the granddaddy of them all. Well, a director has been chosen, and it seems as if Universal are giving up any pretense of making a good movie.
Moviehole reports that Louis Morneau has now landed into the director’s chair for the film. Wait, who? Mourneau is the mastermind behind such quality flicks as “Carnosaur 2,” “Solider Boyz,” “The Hitcher II: I’ve Been Waiting” and “Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead.” Morneau hasn’t directed anything since that “Joy Ride” sequel in 2008 and the choice is at first downright baffling. But once you consider that Universal wants someone who is a) desperate for work and b) will do everything he’s told with no questions asked and c) knows how to create jump scares with no money, then it all falls into place. Also, that picture of Mourneau looking through the camera without his glasses speaks volumes.
Clearly, the studio is not ready to spend anything close to the money they dropped on “The Wolfman” and are taking very tentative steps back into the monster movie genre– eager not to go through the sturm und drang they did a couple of years ago. Casting is set to begin soon, but don’t hold your breath for any names you’re gonna recognize.
