As we noted yesterday, new festivals are bringing a bouquet of new films this spring (many looking for homes). One movie that will be making its world premiere at the Sonoma International Film Festival later this month is “Café Chairel,” a new drama from Fernando Barreda Luna. The Playlist has an exclusive first look at the trailer embedded in this post.
Starring Mauricio Isaac (“Narcos: Mexico”), Tessa Ia (“On the Road”), and Leo Deluglio (“Who Killed Sara?”) and set in a Mexican seaside enclave, the official synopsis for the film is as follows: “Two lonely people cross paths while working in a coffee shop. Even with opposite personalities, they both want to move forward with the business which they use as a conduit to heal their wounds, even though they know nothing about coffee.”
The film will have its first screening in Sonoma on Saturday, March 22, at 6 PM.
This is Luna’s second directorial effort and a change of pace after 2010’s “Atrocious,” a genre thriller that debuted at the Sitges Film Festival.
Other world premieres set for Sonoma this year include Sarah Justine Kerrisch and Matt Maude’s “Sweet Story,” Roush Niaghi and Greg Morris’s “Ali Eats America,” and Mark Benjamin and Katie Carpenter’s “Fatal Watch.” Other screenings include “Dreams (Love, Sex)” as well as the rest of Dag Johan Haugerud’s full trilogy. Mark Craig’s “Apollo 1,” Kevin Macdonald’s “One to One: John and Yoko,” Mimi Cave´s “Holland,” Lorcan Finnegan´s “The Surfer,” and Emilie Blicheld´s “The Ugly Stepsister” are also on deck.
The Sonoma International Film Festival runs from Wednesday, March 19 – Sunday, March 23.
