In 2017, Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman publicly promised to work with a female director every 18 months. She’s made good on that promise ever since and continues to uphold it with the new drama, “Babygirl,” which arrives near the end of the year.
Directed by Halina Reijn, the filmmaker behind “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” her new film, “Babygirl,” a steamy, NSFW erotic drama, centers on a high-powered CEO (Kidman) who puts her career and family on the line when she begins a torrid affair with her much younger intern (read our review).
The intern is played by rising star Harris Dickinson, who we have been touting for years as a soon-to-be massive star. It’s only a matter of time. Co-starring Sophie Wilde, Antonio Banderas, Gaite Jansen, and Dolly Wells.
The film appears to be about the pull of lust, longing, what’s missing in our lives, and the tug of self-destruction some of us sometimes unknowingly seek.
Kidman told People earlier this year that her director’s protection made performing in challenging material like this more accessible.
“That’s what made it so compelling, was being in the hands of Halina, because I knew she wasn’t gonna exploit me,” Kidman said. “I mean, however anyone interprets that, I didn’t feel exploited. I felt very much a part of it. It’s the story that I wanted to be a part of, that I wanted to tell. And every part of me was committed to that.”
“You have your director at the helm going, ‘I will protect you,” she continued. “Nothing that’s going to be in the film will be anything that you are not comfortable with. You are going to be okay.”
“Babygirl” premiered at the Venice Film Festival and also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. A24 will release the film on Christmas Day, December 25. Watch the new trailer below.
