‘Back To Black’: Sam Taylor-Johnson To Direct The Amy Winehouse Biopic

Rock biopics are a dime a dozen nowadays. Thanks to the nearly one-billion-dollar success of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” studios are clamoring for more and more excuses to tell a story featuring a well-known musician and plenty of sing-a-long songs. The latest example appears to be “Back to Black.”

According to Deadline, filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson has signed on to direct “Back to Black,” an adaptation of the life and career of Amy Winehouse. For those unfamiliar, Amy Winehouse became a massive star in the 2000s, with songs like “Rehab” and “Back to Black.” However, her life was cut short in 2011 after she passed away after an apparent overdose. Since then, her legacy has lived on with her music still being played all the time and people obsessing over her unmistakable vocal talent. The new biopic will be written by Matt Greenhalgh.

Taylor-Johnson is perhaps best known as the filmmaker behind the first “50 Shades of Gray” film. However, she has also directed projects such as “Nowhere Boy,” “A Million Different Pieces,” and most recently, episodes of “Solos.” “Nowhere Boy,” interestingly, tells the story of another musician’s early life, focusing on the teenage years of John Lennon.
