Got a Tip?

‘Barbie’: Emerald Fennell, Kingsley Ben-Adir & Even More Join The Greta Gerwig-Directed Film

Directors Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan are both seemingly attempting to cram as many actors as humanly possible into their respective films. The former is behind a live-action “Barbie” movie that sees Aussie actress Margot Robbie star/produce with a script that was co-written by Noah Baumbach (“Marriage Story“), which has been collecting as many names as there are versions of the iconic doll. And yes, there are even more names joining the Warners Bros. movie that is currently filming in the United Kingdom.

Variety lists the latest heap of actors that have joined “Barbie” to include folks such as Kingsley Ben-Adir, Emerald Fennell, Hari Nef, Rhea Perlman, Sharon Rooney, Scott Evans, Ana Cruz Kayne, Ritu Arya, Ncuti Gatwa, Connor Swindells, and Jamie Demetriou.

Fennell pops out because, yes, she’s an actor, but also mostly pivoted to writing and directing, as she was the filmmaker behind “Promising Young Woman” with Carey Mulligan.

The ever-growing “Barbie” cast also consists of Ryan Gosling (“Drive“) as Barbie’s boy-toy beau Ken, America Ferrera (“Superstore“), Simu Liu (“Shang-Chi & The Legend of The Ten Rings“), Issa Rae (“Insecure“), Michael Cera (“Scott Pilgrim vs. The World“), Kate McKinnon (“SNL,” “Ghostbusters: Answer The Call“), Alexandra Shipp (“X-Men: Apocalypse”), Emma Mackey, and Will Ferrell (“Step Brothers“) is said to be playing a toy company CEO that may or may not be based on the doll’s real owners, Mattel.

We’re still waiting on concrete plot details from the studio about Barbie’s big-screen journey. Still, again, we’re predicting some kind of subversion that makes it more than just a toy movie and perhaps one that bumps up against the notion of Barbie as a superficial blonde icon.

Previously incarnations of “Barbie” had Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (“Juno“) write a script. Actresses Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway were also attached to lead the pic at various points before Robbie took over the role.

Given the number of people in the cast, we’re half expecting this to be an homage to “Battle Royale” or “Squid Games,” but for kids. Seriously though, it certainly bodes well given the volume of talent flocking to nab various roles in the Gerwig film and does give the impression that it’ll take a humorous swing since there are so many comedians involved. Oh, and speaking on Nolan’s aforementioned “Oppenheimer” to tie it all back together, actress Olivia Thirlby just joined that stacked cast too.
