There are a ton of stories about actors going to great lengths to land auditions for prized roles. One trick that Barry Keoghan likes to do before landing an audition is to make a short film. Everyone has already seen his Riddler short that was made. (He eventually landed the role of Joker in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman.”) But almost a decade ago, he tried the same thing for Marvel’s Spider-Man.

In a recent interview with the “Happy. Sad. Confused.” podcast, Barry Keoghan was asked about his “Spider-Man” short film that was created nearly a decade ago. Why did he make the short? Well, he wanted to land an audition for the MCU’s Peter Parker.
“They were casting the new Spider-Man,” said Keoghan. “And let me get this straight, no one beats Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. But yeah, I found a little Spider-Man costume in a pound shop. I remember going out to film [the short], and my Granny going, ‘Where are you going with that?’ and I was like, ‘I’m making a short movie.’ But yeah, I’m always making short films.”
He would go on to say that he made shorts for a lot of his big roles, in films like “Eternals,” “Dunkirk,” and “The Batman.” It must have worked, right? Well no.
Sadly, Keoghan didn’t land an audition for the coveted role. All’s well that ends well, however. The actor would make his MCU debut in “Eternals,” and he would land the mother of all comic book villain roles as Joker for “The Batman.” So apparently, his short films do work on occasion.
