‘Batman: Caped Crusader’: Bruce Timm, JJ Abrams & Matt Reeves Combine To Bring A New Animated Series To HBO Max

For many folks that love superhero storytelling or just animated storytelling in general, “Batman: The Animated Series” is often thought of as one of the best examples of both. So, you can understand why people are going to be excited to hear that the creator of that series is returning to the world of Batman for a new show coming to HBO Max.

According to Variety, HBO Max is working on a new animated series titled “Batman: Caped Crusader.” The series is going to be produced by Matt Reeves, JJ Abrams, and Bruce Timm. The latter of which is the co-creator of “Batman: The Animated Series” and is considered one of the best storytellers ever to tackle the Dark Knight. Obviously, Abrams is deeply involved in a lot of the current WarnerMedia projects surrounding the DC superhero world. And Reeves is the director of the upcoming live-action reboot of the ‘Batman’ franchise.

“We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City,” Timm, Reeves, and Abrams said. “The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world.”

Not much is known about ‘Caped Crusader’ other than what the trio of creators said above. However, knowing the pedigree of these guys, there are high hopes that the new series can come close to replicating the feeling of watching “Batman: The Animated Series.” Released in the ‘90s, ‘Batman: TAS’ is able to be a faithful retelling of the Batman mythos that somehow is dark, mature, and exciting enough for adults while also never alienating children. Almost 30 years later, the show is just as good today as it was then.

“It is always fun to feed the insatiable appetite fans have for all things Batman,” said Tom Ascheim, president of Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics. “‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ will entertain first time and die-hard fans alike and, with such an impressive creative team in place, we know we have another future Batman classic in the making.”

It’s unclear when we might see “Batman: Caped Crusader” arrive on HBO Max and Cartoon Network.

Also, in addition to the news about ‘Caped Crusader,’ WarnerMedia announced a new ‘Superman’ animated series. The series, titled “My Adventures With Superman,” is described as a coming-of-age series about a 20-something Clark Kent, along with Lois Lane and her young photographer, Jimmy Olsen. Jack Quaid (“The Boys“) is on board as the voice of Superman, and Alice Lee (“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist“) will voice Lois Lane. You can see the first look below:
