The CW is expanding its superhero offerings this fall with a familiar name, sort of. Because a real, honest-to-goodness Batman TV series is most definitely not on the horizon, the network has decided to do the next best thing, “Batwoman.”
In the first trailer for “Batwoman,” Ruby Rose’s Kate Kane is introduced as the lead that shares a lot of similarities to Bruce Wayne. They’re both wealthy, good at fighting, love the color black, and as she says in the footage, they’re both handsome. And after her former flame is kidnapped, Kane discovers her cousin Bruce also loved dressing as a bat and taking down criminals.
From there, you kinda get the idea, right? She dons a variation of the famous suit and takes over for the departed Wayne, who is apparently long gone. Where did Wayne and the rest of the Bat Family (Robin, Nightwing, etc…) go, exactly? We don’t have a clue, but they’re probably going to lurk in the shadows until CW needs a ratings boost.
“Batwoman” joins the stacked lineup of superhero shows on CW, which currently includes “Arrow” (entering its last season), “The Flash,” “Black Lightning,” “Supergirl,” and “Legends of Tomorrow.” Greg Berlanti, the Kevin Feige of the CW DC shows, returns as executive producer on this series, as well. Separating this new series from the rest is the fact that “Batwoman” features the networks first LGBTQ lead actor, as well as LGBTQ character.
“Batwoman” is expected to arrive on CW later this year.
