'Risk': 'House Of Cards' Creator Signed To Adapt Board Game Into A New TV Series

You know, if a Hollywood studio thinks it’s a good idea to make a film based on the Rubik’s Cube, then who are we to tell them that a board game is off-limits? And if you have the creator of “House of Cards,” then there’s no reason that a TV series based on “Risk” can’t work.

According to Deadline, eOne has teamed with Hasbro on a new TV series based on the board game, “Risk.” And the studios have hired Beau Willimon to act as an executive producer and writer for the series. For those unfamiliar with “Risk,” the game is an excuse to sit with your family and/or friends for a couple of hours and yell at them all in the name of world domination. Well, more specifically, it’s a board game where competing players attempt to use their military might to take over the world and become the dominant force.

Joining Willimon as a producer on the project is Jordan Tappis and the duo’s Westward production company. As mentioned, Willimon is probably best known as the creator and writer of the Netflix hit series, “House of Cards.” His most recent TV project was as writer and creator of the Hulu series, “The First.” Willimon is also the screenwriter of the 2018 film, “Mary Queen of Scots.”

“As we continue to build out eOne’s world-class content slate, we couldn’t think of more perfect partners than Beau and Jordan – whose award-winning storytelling and imagination are among the best in the business,” said Michael Lombardo, President, Global Television, eOne. “In Beau, we’ve found an amazing combination of brilliant producer, singular creator, and avid fan of ‘Risk.’ We can’t wait to work with him and the rest of the Westward team to reimagine that brand and so much more.”

Willimon and Tappis added, “All of us at Westward are thrilled to join forces with eOne to bring to life some of the most successful IP in the marketplace as well as partner on our extensive slate of scripted television shows. We’re excited to develop ‘Risk’ as our first project together.”

There’s no anticipated start date on production of “Risk” or even a network/streamer where we might see the series arrive on TV. However, with Willimon involved and the name recognition of “Risk,” there’s going to be no shortage of destinations interested in showcasing the new series.
