Anne Peacock has been hired by Universal to write a new take on the “Cinderella” story. Again. We would say that fairy tales are the new superheroes, but it’s not like studios are threatening competing “Iron Man” movies. Yep, Snow White has company, as if it wasn’t enough that Relativity‘s “Snow White” was to go against Universal’s “Snow White And The Huntsman.” Now we have competing Cinderella projects, as Universal (again — so, so desperate) is trying to develop this property before Disney goes ahead with their Mark Romanek-helmed effort.
Apparently this project has been in development “for some time,” but only now gaining traction since every studio has to have five fairy tale movies in development, catering to an audience deathly afraid of adult stories and situations, and children who probably, let’s face it, eat their own snot. Peacock, who worked on “The Chronicles Of Narnia,” is developing a story which is currently being kept “under wraps,” but, you know, is probably going to be about FUCKING CINDERELLA.
As much as certain execs, producers and directors crow about original and fresh stories, developments like this remind you that, if they could get away with it, studios would just re-release the same movie five times each year. We’re not going to list all the fairy tale films in development for the next year, particularly because the bottle and the shotgun are simply too close, but suffice to say that this is the next big thing, and it’s still a gamble that people are really going to see these movies. Like most creatively-bankrupt Hollywood decisions, hopefully this gamble does not pay off, forcing Hollywood to make superhero movies inst- oh, wait, we’re doomed, aren’t we?
