Berlin Film Festival Awards: Wes Anderson Takes Best Director

Another year, and another Berlin International Film Festival is in the can. Nope, these trophies won’t have much effect on Oscar potential, but they will make many of these pictures attractive for U.S. distributors, as well as programmers at other fests around the world looking to fill out their slates.

This year’s jury was presided by director Tom Tykwer, who explained how they went about choosing the winners. “We wanted to award prizes not just for what cinema can do and where it is, but where it could go in the future,” he said.

Perhaps the most high profile winner in Berlin was Wes Anderson who nabbed Best Director for his animated “Isle Of Dogs.” To the surprise of many, winning the top prize, the Golden Bear, along with Best First Feature was Adina Pintilie’s “Touch Me Not.” Marcelo Martinessi’s “The Heiresses” also managed two prizes, while the well-received Gael Garcia Bernal starring heist flick “Museum” (“Museo”) scored Best Original Screenplay.
