It’s safe to say that there isn’t another series on TV right now that can compare to “Betty.” Honestly, there aren’t many films that can be used to compare, either. Well, except for the film “Skate Kitchen,” which “Betty” is a spin-off from. So, it makes sense that the unique series would also feature a distinct soundtrack.
And in honor of “Betty” recently premiering on HBO and the soundtrack for the series coming on May 15 from Milan Records, we’re thrilled to give our readers a chance to check out an exclusive track from the soundtrack. For those not familiar with the show, “Betty” tells the story of a group of female skateboarders that come together in New York City. It’s a coming of age story that spun off from the 2018 acclaimed feature, “Skate Kitchen,” from writer-director Crystal Moselle.
The music for the series comes from composer Aska Matsumiya, who previously worked on “Skate Kitchen.” In addition to her work on that film, Matsumiya recently lent her talents to the music for the Amazon feature, “Selah and the Spades,” which was just released and is getting tons of critical acclaim. And when you hear the music from “Betty,” it’s obvious that Matsumiya is bringing something new and different to the score, ditching the conventional orchestral instruments for a more electronic vibe, calling to mind shoegaze and trap music.
“Writing the music for Betty allowed me to be in touch with a side of myself that remains youthful and raw and spontaneous,” said the composer. “It was really so much fun and I tried to let that momentum carry the music.”
