After years of the “Beverly Hills Cop” franchise gathering dust on the shelf, Netflix has decided to revive it for, at least, one more adventure. And even though we are still likely pretty far away from its eventual 2024 release, we do have our first look at Eddie Murphy returning to his iconic role as Axel Foley, courtesy of Empire.

Appropriately titled “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley,” the new sequel coming 20 years after the most recent entry in the franchise, the film is joining the lost list of recently released legacy sequels that have dominated the film industry over the past several years. Just like the most recent ‘Ghostbusters’ or ‘Top Gun,’ for example, the new ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ brings back original cast members such as Murphy, Judge Reinhold, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot, but it also introduces new faces such as Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Taylour Paige, the latter of which being Foley’s adult daughter.
Another returning person to the crew is producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who thinks ‘Axel Foley’ is going to be every bit as popular and successful as his other recent film, the aforementioned “Top Gun: Maverick.” How will that happen? Well, Bruckheimer is banking on the emotional aspects of the new ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ film to help put it over the edge.
“It’s about the emotion,” he said. “No matter how funny it is, how much great action it has, it’s all about the heartstrings.”
As mentioned, it’s unclear when “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley,” which is directed by Mark Molloy, will arrive on Netflix. It’s being teased for 2024, so hopefully it’s not too far off. You can see the first-look photo below:
