There’s no doubt that Nate Parker is this year’s breakout sensation from the Sundance Film Festival. The actor/writer/director made a huge splash with “Birth Of A Nation,” which many are already positioning as a major awards season player, and Hollywood has undoubtedly been eagerly knocking on his door. However, Parker seems to have taken his time in making any moves, and thoughtful about where he goes next. But it sounds like he wants to do something big.
Deadline reports that Parker has signed up direct an original feature film for Legendary, the folks behind such fare as “Warcraft,” “Pacific Rim,” and “Kong: Skull Island.” They generally don’t do small (though folks should check out the baseball doc “Fastball“), and it sounds like Parker is cooking up something special. There are no exact plot details, but his movie will involve “creating a world.” Bold stuff.
With half a year still to go, and a likely a very busy awards season ahead, this won’t be the last time you hear Nate Parker’s name. And certainly, it looks like his career path is about to change in a major way. As for other opportunities, I’m sure we’ll see Parker signed for a few more things as the heat continues to build around him.
