'Black Earth Rising' Trailer: John Goodman & Michaela Coel Star In Upcoming Netflix Limited Series

There’s no easy way to describe the new Netflix series “Black Earth Rising.” The subject matter isn’t fun to talk about, and the new trailer only hints at what the larger mystery might be that lies underneath the tragic tale. But one thing is for sure, this is a limited series that everyone should be prepared to watch.

The trailer gives viewers the basics – there’s a young woman, who is attempting to find out the truth about her past. As a child, she escaped a war-torn Rwanda and was adopted by a white family in England. Now, years later, she hopes to go back to where she was born and try to figure out how she was able to survive a genocide. And along the way, she runs into a government official, as well as a slew of shady folks, who might have clues to the real reason she was able to escape her tragic past.

“Black Earth Rising” comes from writer-director Hugo Blick. The filmmaker is probably most known for his work on the Golden Globe and Peabody Award-winning 2014 series “The Honourable Woman.”

“Black Earth Rising” stars Michaela Coel, who is best known for her series “Chewing Gum,” as well as, John Goodman, Harriet Walter, Tamara Tunie, and Noma Dumezweni.

The limited series hits Netflix on January 25.

Black Earth Rising, a limited series launching on Netflix Jan 25, is a contemporary thriller that follows the journey of Kate Ashby (Michaela Coel), a Rwandan orphaned by the genocide, raised in London by an adoptive mother and trying to discover the truth of her past. She is helped in her search by lawyer Michael Ennis (John Goodman). The series examines the West’s relationship with Africa, set in a world of prosecution of war crimes.
