Charlie Brooker‘s “Black Mirror” is arguably our modern version of twisty genre shows like “The Twilight Zone” and “Outer Limits” but specifically focuses on the dark side of technology from the exploitation of digital people referred to as Cookies to how tech can be used against us or hurts society. More often than not we see characters navigating a dystopian setting. We haven’t seen new episodes since the fifth season debuted back in June 2019 and season six is finally coming together with casting in full swing.
A new casting report from Variety reveals that Salma Hayek Pinault (“Magic Mike’s Last Dance“) and Canadian actress Annie Murphy (“Schitt’s Creek“) are in talks to join the sci-fi series in hush-hush roles. Although, we’ll have to wait for further information about who they’ll be playing and what those segments are about.
The actresses would be joining an impressive cast that is being assembled that consists of Zazie Beetz, Paapa Essiedu, Josh Hartnett, Aaron Paul, Kate Mara, Danny Ramirez, Clara Rugaard, Auden Thornton, Anjana Vasan, and Rory Culkin.
We can only imagine what Brooker and his creative team could be tackling next with so many things happening over the last couple of years that could end up inspiring episodes. Tech billionaires like Elon Musk trying to acquire Twitter (once seen as a danger to the social media app) while also competing with other billionaires to launch commercial space travel for the very rich seem like perfect fodder for “Black Mirror” satire.
There is also the pandemic along with the rise in misinformation and domestic terrorism, then again, this was covered in Brooker’s “Death To” Netflix specials, and they might not want to lean too much into that. The show’s creator has previously indicated some current events might be off the table because reality is “too depressing” as it is.
