By nature, an anthology series won’t hit it out of the park every time. When “Black Mirror” misses the mark, its often because the target it chooses is a bit on the nose, and I have to say, I’m getting that vibe from the latest season four teaser, for the episode “Hang The DJ.”
Directed by Tim Van Patten (“The Sopranos,” “Game of Thrones“), starring Georgina Campbell, Joe Cole, and George Blagden, and of course, written by the show’s creator Charlie Brooker, this entry takes a comedic look at online dating (though a bit more advanced). In true “Black Mirror” fashion, I’d imagine there’s a bleak twist somewhere, but do we really need a paranoid parable about the future of hooking up digitally? Hopefully there’s a few more layers to this one. That said, “Nosedive,” the Instagram-esque episode of season three, was pretty great.
“Black Mirror” episode four still has no firm release date, but if it doesn’t arrive by the end of the month, I’ll be shocked.
