'Blade Runner 2099': Hunter Schafer Joins Cast Of Upcoming Prime Video Limited Series

Prime Video‘s Blade Runner 2099 has another lead. THR reports that “Euphoria” star Hunter Schafer joins Michelle Yeoh on the cast list of the upcoming limited series. Both actresses will co-star in the show, but their roles remain unspecified.

It’s another starring role for Schafer as she waits to hear if “Euphoria” Season 3 will come to fruition at HBO. And while an update on the series arrives this October, it’s telling that the actress lands another major role after previous recent ones in “The Hunger Games: A Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes” and the upcoming “Cuckoo.” So how long may Schafer and other “Euphoria” stars add upcoming roles to their workload before it causes scheduling conflicts for Sam Levinson‘s new season? Another “Euphoria” star, Eric Dane, landed a role in Prime Video’s “Countdown” earlier this week, so it’s anyone’s guess now.  Also of note: Schafer has another upcoming role opposite Anne Hathaway, in A24‘s “Mother Mary,” so it’s not as if she’s wed to HBO’s hit show for work.  And neither are Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, or Jacob Elordi, among others; something to think about moving forward.

But back to “Blade Runner 2099” for a moment. “Shining Girls” showrunner Silka Luisa also serves as showrunner for “2099” with “Blade Runner” director Ridley Scott on board as executive producer. Other executive producers on the Prime Video limited series include Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Ben Roberts, David W. Zucker, Clayton Krueger, Tom Spezialy, Richard Sharkey, Michael Green, Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, and Isa Dick Hackett. And “Shogun” director Jonathan van Tulleken will direct the series’ first two episodes, so it’s safe to say “2099” will have some buzz around it.

Schafer has made recent headlines for her political activism. In February, she was arrested in NYC with Jewish Voice For Peace protestors who had plans to disrupt President Joe Biden’ TV appearance on “Late Night With Seth Meyers” to advocate a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war. She’s also been involved in various LGBTQ+ campaigns over the years.  Before acting, Schafer started her career as a fashion model.

If “Euphoria” Season 3 doesn’t pan out at HBO, then “Blade Runner 2099” is a strong replacement for Schafer. The first “Blade Runner” project since 2017’s “Blade Runner 2049,” the Prime Video series is bound to garner an audience given the cult popularity of Scott’s 1982 film and Denis Villeneuve‘s follow-up. Schafer would thrive playing a replicant too, but let’s first see what Silka Luisa has in mind for the actress.
