It’s easy to forget just how monumental “The Blair Witch Project” was when it landed on the cinema scene in 1999. Made for a mere $60,000, the film by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez was an instant sensation at Sundance, got invited to Cannes (I bet you forgot about that), and when it was released that summer, it earned a staggering $248 million worldwide. The movie turned found footage into a cottage industry in the horror genre, and a new franchise was born.
Unfortunately, ‘Blair Witch’ peaked early. Subsequent sequels never matched the freshness of the original, and even an attempt to reboot the property last year with Adam Wingard also missed the mark. However, brands are valuable things, and worth investing in, because if they succeed, it’s a money train that will never run out of steam. So “The Blair Witch Project” is getting another kick at the can — this time on the small screen.
The film’s co-director Eduardo Sanchez recently revealed on the Diminishing Returns podcast, where he shared details of the brewing plan.
“For us, it’s a very natural thing to go and say ‘Hey, let’s do a frickin’ Blair Witch show and you can say it’s from the original creators and we can bring in a whole bunch of interesting directors to direct episodes, ‘ ” he said,
The comment seems to suggest ‘Blair Witch’ could follow the anthology framework that has worked so well with “American Horror Story,” but Sanchez is playing it cool for now — though he doesn’t entirely dismiss the notion.
Well, you know. I can’t really discuss. I think that the idea of a ‘Blair Witch’ anthology has always been very – just a really interesting thing. You’re close. You’re in the ballpark. You know, and I think it might be one of those things that might be – you know? The more you think about it, you’re like ‘That might be the perfect… a TV show. You know?’ So, we’ll see what happens, but I think that’s the next big thing for ‘Blair Witch.’ Probably TV,” he said.
Intriguing stuff, and a development made more interesting by the news that, according to Sanchez, Lionsgate no longer owns the rights to ‘Blair Witch.’ It would be quite something if Sanchez could succeed now where years of followups couldn’t connect.
