‘Blonde’: Ana de Armas Thinks It’s “Disgusting” That Her Nude Scenes In The Film Will Circulate The Internet

The world premiere of “Blonde” at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month confirmed that Andrew Dominik‘s film is everything critics expected it to be, and maybe more. After all, the film did receive a 14-minute standing ovation, the longest at the festival. But star Ana de Armas doesn’t expect the film’s transition to audiences at theaters and on Netflix to be smooth sailing, especially given her nude scenes in the movie.

In a cover story interview with Variety, de Armas said that she fully expects clips and screenshots of her nudity in “Blonde” to circulate online. “I know what’s going to go viral, and it’s disgusting,” said the actress. But neither that nor a possible poor critical reception of the film kept de Armas from taking on the part of Monroe. “It’s upsetting just to think about it. I can’t control it; you can’t really control what they do and how they take things out of context,” de Armas continued. “I don’t think it gave me second thoughts; it just gave me a bad taste to think about the future of those clips.”

But even knowing about the future harmful exposure of certain scenes, de Armas couldn’t turn down her role as Monroe in “Blonde.” She felt a strong connection to the film and Dominik’s vision to portray Monroe in a particular way. “I did things in this movie I would have never done for anyone else, ever,” de Armas said earlier in the cover story interview about the risks she took to play Monroe. “I did it for her, and I did it for Andrew.”

“Blonde” will no doubt continue to be a node of controversy beyond de Arma’s nude scenes. Based on Joyce Carol Oates‘s 2000 novel of the same name, Dominik’s film is an intense, unrelenting take on the biopic genre. The film follows Monroe from her childhood to her time as a Hollywood icon, examining the traumas and rifts that cleave her public and private identities apart. The film has already divided critics at Venice, and expect that to continue through to Awards Season.

And with any luck, the strength of de Arma’s performance as Monroe will outweigh whatever blowback occurs due to her nude scenes circulating the internet. “Blonde” begins streaming on Netflix on September 28.
