Next month will see the release of “The Kingdom,” a new French-language thriller from first-time feature director Julien Colonna, and thankfully, the studio has sent us a trailer for the film.
The new movie focuses on a teenage girl, Lesia, learning her deep connections to the criminal underworld as her menacing fugitive father, Pierre Paul, is hiding out in Corsica in the summer of 1995. Actors Ghjuvanna Benedetti and Saveriu Santucci are set as leads in the father-daughter crime story.
An official synopsis for the film hailing from Metrograph Pictures:
On the pale, sun-soaked island of Corsica in the summer of 1995, the teenage Lesia is plucked from her sheltered life and taken to a remote villa where her fugitive mob boss father, Pierre-Paul, is hiding out. Pierre Paul is a menacing figure, a near stranger to Lesia, and at first she feels trapped by the secrecy and danger which defines his life. But when an assassination attempt sets a chain of bloody vendettas in motion, Lesia and Paul-Pierre are forced to go on the run together. As they flee, Lesia becomes closer than ever with her father, and as they wade together through the violent underworld which he is entrenched in, his devotion to revenge begins to rub off on her.
Having previously made an impact at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024, The Playlist got a chance to review “The Kingdom,” and you can read our thoughts on it here.
We’ve seen some extremely impressive crime thrillers coming out of France in the past, and this new crime story is giving off “A Prophet” vibes, which is a huge compliment for a first-time director.
“The Kingdom” will be heading to theaters on May 30 and you can watch that spectacular new trailer below.
