‘Blue Beetle’ Director Talks Post-Credits Teasing Future DCU Stories: “It Felt Like The Right Thing For Us To Continue With”

Over the weekend, DC Studios released “Blue Beetle,” the latest attempt to kickstart a superhero franchise. And judging by the opening weekend box office, while it was the #1 film domestically, not nearly as many people watched Angel Manuel Soto’s superhero film as the studio might have hoped. That said, if you did watch the film, then you got a tease at what could be a continuing story in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU, thanks to a mid-credits scene in “Blue Beetle.”

In an interview with EW, filmmaker Angel Manuel Soto talked about the mid-credits scene in “Blue Beetle” and how it might tease an upcoming story in the just-rebooted DCU.

**Spoilers below for the mid-credits scene for “Blue Beetle.” You’ve been warned.**

If you didn’t see the film or just want a reminder, the mid-credits scene in “Blue Beetle” expanded on something that was talked about in the film—Ted Kord, who doesn’t make an appearance in the film, has been missing and presumed dead. However, in the mid-credits scene, we are shown his superhero lair where he used to be the first Blue Beetle (though he was more like a Batman-esque character, who used his wealth and technology to combat villains, and not the alien tech-powered character Jamie Reyes is in the film). The scene ends with a message from Ted Kord saying he’s actually alive, but no one knows exactly where he is.

This is a big deal for comic book fans, as the Ted Kord character is quite beloved in fandom. For some, it was seen as a bit of a missed opportunity to not include him in this first “Blue Beetle” film. However, the idea that he could be used for future DCU stories is an exciting prospect. Soto explained to EW that it was a combination of wanting to tease Kord’s return, as well as news that Gunn and Safran were developing a “Booster Gold” TV series for the DCU that prompted the mid-credits tease. You see, in the comics Ted Kord and the character of Booster Gold are friends who often team up for adventures.

“We all love Ted Kord and Booster Gold, and knowing that James Gunn also has plans for Booster Gold, it felt like the right thing for us to continue with,” Soto said. “Ted Kord is still alive, he’s somewhere out there in the universe, and whatever the future holds for our hero is open to interpretation. So, whether that is Booster Gold or Ted Kord or if it is both of them [together], the possibility exists and it is something that we want to entertain.”

Of course, we have no idea if the “Booster Gold” TV series is something that will pick up this Ted Kord tease and run with it. Perhaps, this is just a tease that could pay off in future DCU stories or maybe a “Blue Beetle” sequel (though the box office isn’t providing much hope for another film in this franchise). Regardless, we do know that “Blue Beetle” takes place in the newly rebooted DCU that Gunn and Safran are developing, so if a future film or TV project wants to pick up the Ted Kord loose end, it’s there for the taking.

“Blue Beetle” is in theaters now.
