As seen in the trailer, “Bookworm” tells the story of a precocious young girl who is reluctantly reunited with her estranged father (Wood). The young woman sees this as an opportunity to use her father to take her out into the New Zealand wilderness to search for an illusive, mysterious animal. Oh yeah, and did we mention the young girl’s father is a washed-up illusionist? And who doesn’t want to see Elijah Wood turn himself into a down-on-his-luck Criss Angel?

The film stars Elijah Wood, Morgana O’Reilly, Michael Smiley, and Nell Fisher. “Bookworm” is directed by Ant Timpson. The filmmaker previously directed “Come to Daddy,” another strange entry in Wood’s filmography. In addition, Timpson (along with Wood) have produced a number of interesting films like the criminally underrated “Turbo Kid” and the amazing “The Greasy Strangler.”

“Bookworm” arrives in New Zealand cinemas on August 8. A full international release has yet to be announced. You can watch the trailer below.

Here’s the synopsis:

In the midst of a family crisis, a washed-up American illusionist (Elijah Wood) and his long-estranged precocious daughter (Nell Fisher) venture into the New Zealand wilderness in search of a mythical black panther.
