Brad Pitt & Director Joseph Kosinski Team For Racing Flick

Hollywood always wants Brad Pitt, but following his Best Supporting Actor Oscar win for Quentin Tarantino‘s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood,” the actor seems even more in demand and also willing to try new things outside of his usual drama realm. The actor recently signed on to Sony‘s action film, “Bullet Train” from director David Leitch (“Atomic Blonde“) and another big project from “Spider-Man” franchise filmmaker Jon Watts (“Cop Car“) co-starring longtime pal George Clooney. The project was so sought after, it led to a major bidding war that Apple Studios won.

Now, yet another bidding war has broken out over a Pitt-involved project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this one will be helmed by “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski, and it is a racing drama. The untitled flick will be penned by Ehren Kruger (“Top Gun: Maverick,” “Ghost In The Shell”) with mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer attached as well. Details on the film itself are sadly scarce at the moment.

The hot package deal’s competitors are studios and streamers such as Paramount, MGM, Sony, Universal, Netflix, Apple, Amazon, and even Disney. The notable addition is Disney, which usually doesn’t get involved with projects caught in the middle of a bidding war.

Formula One British racing star Lewis Hamilton is also reportedly involved with the untitled film. However, it’s not entirely known in what capacity, though it may give us clues to what kind of racing. But it’s unclear if he’s part of the creative/producing team or will be actually featured alongside Pitt in front of the camera. Either way, Kosinski tends to make fast-moving, propulsive movies, so he seems well-suited to the racing genre.

Pitt and Kosinski almost worked together alongside Tom Cruise on the racing film “Go Like Hell” that eventually morphed into James Mangold‘s Oscar-winning pic “Ford v Ferarri” led by Matt Damon and Christian Bale. The pair were still keen on working together within the same genre leading to the new film.

After multiple delays due to the pandemic and studio shuffling, “Top Gun: Maverick” is set for a May 27, 2022 release, a film Kosinski, Bruckheimer, and Kruger all worked on together.
