John Boyega stands as one of the most promising up-and-coming actors currently working in Hollywood. After his debut in “Attack the Block” and his star-making role as Finn in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy, he recently wowed with his performance in “Red, White and Blue” in the anthology series “Small Axe” from Steve McQueen. The first trailer for Boyega’s next outing has just arrived for viewers to take a look at. Directed by Abi Damaris Corbin, and releasing wide this Fall after its premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, is the robbery thriller “Breaking” (formerly titled, “892“).
Also in the cast with Boyega is Michael Kenneth Williams. Alongside the forthcoming “Surrounded” from director Anthony Mandler at an unspecified time this year, “Breaking” is one of two posthumous releases following his passing last September. Bank robbery thrillers can often find unique variety in their stories despite their more focused plotting. Hollywood creatives can take the fully sympathetic route with the Sidney Lumet classic “Dog Day Afternoon” or go bombastic and purely sensational like the just released “Ambulance” from action master Michael Bay.
In our aforementioned review for “Breaking,” speaking on the performance from its main actor, “Boyega, sporting a gravelly voice, touched by a slight southern twang, plays him (Brian Brown-Easley) as respectful and concerned, rarely making eye contact, his head tipped in a deferential manner.” With a leading role that sounds like a unique turn from Boyega, and the notable dynamic of being a true and pertinent story, “Breaking” should be a film worth looking into.
