It's called turning lemons into lemonade, and while "Bridesmaids" director Paul Feig is still lining up his next feature outing, he's got a new comedy project that brings the "Freak & Geeks" co-creator and producer back to television.
While working on "Bridget Jones 3" before eventually bailing as the stars continue to haggle/wait for the perfect script, Feig used the opportunity to see if there was interest in "Ronna & Beverly." And there was. Conceived by Jessica Chaffin and Jamie Denbo, they played the titular gals, overbearing Jewish mothers who are also host a chat show. It sounds sorta like a "Saturday Night Live" skit, and it kind of is, as they round up celebrity guests and let their accents, cluelessness and outrageous clothing do the rest. That said, the stage show is massive hit in both the U.S. and the U.K. and they've rounded up a staggering list of guests over time, and while a pilot was made for Showtime a while back (that featured Jon Hamm), the network didn't pick it up. And they might be regretting that decision.
Sky Atlantic HD has ordered up six episodes, and Feig will produce the show that he describes to Deadline as "Absolutely Fabulous" meets "everyone’s obnoxious parents who ask horrifying questions.” You can check out some clips below — including interviews with Eli Roth and Joey McIntyre from their stage shows — but for this writer at least, it's not really our bag. That said, the broad appeal this will have and the no-brainer concept make it easy to see why it was snatched up.
For now, Feig is still eyeball his next movie and he continues to toe the same line regarding a "Bridesmaids" sequel which is essentially that he'd love to do it, but only if they can do it right.
