'Bright' Trailer: Black Lives Matter Becomes A Punchline

Netflix has pretty much done it all, from becoming the destination for documentary and indie films, to the place to binge watch your favorite series. The company has slowly been encroaching on Oscar season too. Now,  the last hill the streaming giant has to conquer is the big budget event movie, and this month they’ll attempt just that with “Bright.” However, it’s increasingly looking like an epic faceplant.

Perhaps they shouldn’t have hitched their wagon to David Ayer, who directs a script by Max Landis (yep), that’s set in a world where humans, orcs, and elves exist, and follows a mismatched cop team who have to save the world from Enchantress (well, a reasonable facsimile). We’re now three trailers in and nothing works except for Edgar Ramirez‘s beautifully attired character. We might just drunk watch “Bright” for him alone. However, even that might not even wash out the sour taste of the truly awful Black Lives Matter joke that acts as the stinger for this promo. Really, Netflix? Here’s the official synopsis:

Set in an alternate present-day, this action-thriller directed by David Ayer follows two cops from very different backgrounds (Ward, a human, and Jakoby, an orc) who embark on a routine patrol night that will ultimately alter the future as their world knows it.  Battling both their own personal differences as well as an onslaught of enemies, they must work together to protect a thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which in the wrong hands could destroy everything.

Starring Will Smith, Joel Edgerton, Noomi Rapace, Lucy Fry, Edgar Ramirez, Ike Barinholtz, Enrique Murciano, Jay Hernandez, Andrea Navedo, Veronica Ngo, Alex Meraz, Margaret Cho, Brad William Henke, Dawn Oliveri, and Kenneth Choi, “Bright” lands on December 22nd.
