‘Candy Cane Lane’: Eddie Murphy Reteaming With ‘Boomerang’ Filmmaker On A New Christmas Film For Amazon

After the success of Eddie Murphy’sComing 2 America,” it appears Amazon Studios is quick to get back in business with the actor-comedian, as the studio has announced a new film, “Candy Cane Lane.”

According to Amazon, Eddie Murphy is set to star in “Candy Cane Lane,” a new holiday film that will be directed by Reginald Hudlin, written by Kelly Younger and inspired by Younger’s childhood holiday experiences. While plot details are being kept secret, the film is expected to begin filming this winter.

Hudlin and Murphy have previously worked together way back in 1992 on the comedy film, “Boomerang.” At that time, Murphy was coming off major hits like “Beverly Hills Cop” and “Coming to America.” Since then, Hudlin made a number of other films and TV projects, including his most recent film, “Safety,” which was released on Disney+ in 2020.

“The holiday season is my favorite time of year—just ask my family about my nine-hour Christmas playlist!” said Hudlin. “I‘m excited to be working again with Eddie Murphy, Brian Grazer, and Amazon.”

Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, added, “As we know firsthand with our hit ‘Coming 2 America,’ Eddie is someone who brings global audiences together, and we can’t wait to make it happen again! We look forward to seeing the multi-talented Reggie Hudlin take the helm in bringing this future holiday classic to life!”

“Candy Cane Lane” is the first film to come from the recent deal between Murphy and Amazon Studios, which includes three films. It appears Murphy is hoping to carve out a streaming niche in the same way Adam Sandler has on Netflix. In addition to starring, Murphy is also on board as a producer, joining Imagine’s Brian Grazer and president of features, Karen Lunder, and Charisse Hewitt-Webster

A release date has yet to be announced, but if filming begins this winter, a Holiday 2023 release window seems most likely.
