Got a Tip?

‘Candy’ Trailer: Jessica Biel Stars In First Of Two 2022 Candy Montgomery Mini-Series On May 9

It’s a strong year so far for the true-crime genre. “The Tinder Swindler” captivated Netflix subscribers in early February, with “Inventing Anna” and “Bad Vegan” close behind. But other streaming channels are in on the action, too, like Hulu. Critics love “The Dropout,” Hulu’s show on the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes. Another Hulu miniseries, “The Girl From Plainville,” has a lot of buzz too.

And that’s not all Hulu has on their schedule this year for true crime. Next up: “Candy,” a five-episode miniseries about Candy Montgomery, the murderous 1980s housewife. The show stars Jessica Biel as the Texan suburban mom who murdered her friend and neighbor Betty Gore with an ax in the early summer of 1980. It’s another dark role on TV for Biel after her turn in the first season of “The Sinner,” a performance that nabbed her an Emmy nomination for Lead Actress in a Limited Series.

Here’s the show’s official synopsis:

Candy Montgomery is a 1980 housewife and mother who did everything right—good husband, two kids, nice house, even the careful planning and execution of transgressions—but when the pressure of conformity builds within her, her actions scream for just a bit of freedom. Until someone tells her to shush. With deadly results.

“Candy” also stars Melanie Lynskey, fresh off her success in Showtime’sYellowjackets,” as Betty Gore. The show also stars Timothy Simons, Pablo Schreiber, and Raúl EsparzaRobin Veith and Nick Antosca, who wrote and produced the Emmy award-winning “The Act” for Hulu back in 2019, are the series creators.

Is “Candy” not enough Candy Montgomery for you? Well, another rendition of the story debuts on HBO Max later this year. That one, entitled “Love & Death,” stars Elizabeth Olsen as Montgomery and Lily Rabe as Gore. Jesse Plemons, Krysten Ritter, and Patrick Fugit also star in that one. So: which will win out as the supreme Candy Montgomery series? Only time will tell.

“Candy” premieres as a five-night event starting May 9 through May 13. Watch the new trailer for the series below.
