Cannes 2020 Line-up: Wes Anderson's 'French Dispatch,' 2 New Steve McQueen Movies & Much More

After weeks of “will they or won’t they?” the Cannes Film Festival was recently officially canceled due to COVID-19. However, in place of trying to emulate the “digital” festival model that folks like SXSW and Tribeca put on earlier this spring, the organizers of the prestigious French event decided to forgo any screenings of films, digital or otherwise, and instead just release a list of films that make up its 2020 “Official Selections.” And now, thanks to the recent announcement, we know the 56 films that would have been selected to play at this year’s Cannes.

Leading off, some of the expected films that have been rumored for months were listed as part of the Official Selections. Films such as Wes Anderson’sThe French Dispatch,” Francois Ozon’sEte 85,” Naomi Kawase’sTrue Mothers,” and Thomas Vinterberg’sAnother Round” were all named to the list. Interestingly, Steve McQueen has not one, but two new films selected with “Mangrove” and “Lover’s Rock.” Though, again, these films won’t actually screen or take part in any Cannes competition.

All told, this year’s Official Selections is a fairly diverse mixture of projects, featuring a number of films from first-time filmmakers and female directors, marking another year where Cannes tries to be more inclusive in its representation. 15 of the features are from first-time directors, while 16 of the films listed are helmed by women. The 56 films selected were chosen out of a potential pool of 2,067 features that were submitted. Of the films selected, there’s a real worldwide flavor, with 147 countries being represented, and 21 of them coming from France, showing the event’s reliance on local flavor this year.

As mentioned, just because the films are listed as “Official Selections,” there isn’t a scheduled competition and there won’t be any awards. This year, the Cannes selection is more of a badge of honor, allowing for some of the films to carry the moniker of an Official Selection, while also having the ability to play at other festivals later this year and compete without issue.
