Last week, after much speculation, we finally were given the initial lineup for this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Of course, the main lineup typically features the biggest names in film and this year is no different, with a new ‘Indiana Jones’ film as well as new films from directors like Martin Scorsese and Wes Anderson. But if you’re more interested in checking out the best up-and-coming filmmakers working today, take a look at what Cannes Critics’ Week has in store.
For those unaware, Cannes Critics’ Week section highlights new films from first and second-time filmmakers. These are the folks that will likely find themselves scoring major slots in future film festivals thanks to the spotlight that Cannes gives them this year. The section features seven films in competition, as well as four films that have earned special screenings.
Of the films announced, some of the more intriguing prospects include Jason Yu’s “Sleep (Jam).” Yu formerly worked under auteur Bong Joon Ho, and his feature directorial debut includes actors Lee Sun-kyun (“Parasite”) and Jung Yu-mi (“Train To Busan”). Another film to look out for is Amanda Nell Eu’s “Tiger Stripes,” which is a horror-fantasy take on the classic coming-of-age film, as a young girl begins to transform in unexpected ways. Then you have Vladimir Perišić’s “Lost Country.” The filmmaker notably premiered his first film, “Ordinary People,” at the 2009 Critics’ Week.
Cannes Critics’ Week begins on May 17. You can check out the full lineup below:
