Tessa Thompson & Director Nia DaCosta Reunite For 'Hedda'

Coming off the box office success of “Creed III,” actress Tessa Thompson is already putting together new projects, such as the sci-fi film “Ash” from Flying Lotus and more “Creed-related film/television spinoffs that could involve her character, Bianca. But there’s more. The Hollywood Reporter is adding one more to the mix, “Hedda,” that will see Thompson reunite with director Nia DaCosta. The pair previously worked together on the Neon drama “Little Woods.”

That new feature film will be an “epic and visceral reimagination” of Henrik Ibsen’s famed 1890 stage play that will see the actress tackling that titular role with DaCosta handling both writing and directing duties. The project is being set up at Orion Pictures and Brad Pitt’s Plan B, which have an excellent track record for artistic ventures like this one.

The Norwegian play, “Hedda Gabler,” has been referred to as the female version of “Hamlet” and could easily become a career-defining role for Thompson. The acclaimed play dramatizes the experiences of the title character, Hedda, a general’s daughter, who is trapped in a marriage and a house that she does not want. It’s unclear what a “reimagining” would mean, but the play has been both modernized and done as a period piece. Regarding the project’s potential, director Trevor Nunn’s 1975 adaptation of “Hedda” would earn Glenda Jackson an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

DaCosta has been working on studio projects lately with a reimaging/soft-reboot of the “Candyman” franchise for MGM that starred Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Next up is the biggest film of her professional career releases on November 11, with the “Captain Marvel” sequel “The Marvels.”
