Following her recent Oscar-nominated role in Bradley Cooper’s dramatic biopic “Maestro,” actress Carey Mulligan is switching it up and returning to the world of comedy. Variety reports that Universal’s Focus Features has acquired the new Mulligan film “The Ballad of Wallis Island,” formerly known as “One For The Money.”
The pic hails from the director James Griffiths (“Cuban Fury”) and is produced by veteran British comedian Steve Coogan via Baby Cow Productions with a supporting cast that includes Sian Clifford (“Fleabag”) and Akemnji Ndifornyen (“Famalam”).
Screenwriters Tom Basden (“After Life”) and Tim Key (“Great Expectations”), who will also take roles, are seasoned comedians themselves and have penned the upcoming comedy. “The Ballad of Wallis Island” sees a lottery winner named Charles (played by Key) use his winnings to attempt to reunite his favorite musical duo, Moritimer-McGwyer, played by Mulligan and Basden. However, the act similar to Sonny and Cher have long broken up, making it more awkward is that they had been previously romantically involved, adding to the comedic tension as they’ve been summoned to perform for Charles’ dream gig on a remote island, the titular Wallis Island.
This pic will be a reunion of sorts for Mulligan and Focus Features, as they previously worked together on the Oscar-winning revenge satire, “Promising Young Woman.” Universal also released her Harvey Weinstein drama “She Said” as well. Baby Cow’s Rupert Majendie is serving as lead producer and is coming off of producing the sci-fi festival hit “Brian & Charles,” which was also set up at Focus, adding to this established relationship with the distributor.
Mulligan, Basden, Key, Griffiths, Sarah Monteith, Laurence Brown, Stephen Kelliher, and Yana Georgieva are also part of the film’s producing team. The next step will be finding a spot to release “The Ballad of Wallis Island” and putting together a first-look trailer to help promote it.
