Got a Tip?

Catherine Hardwicke To Direct ’60s Brit Gangster Pic ‘Diamond’

After taking a sharp swing towards the mainstream with “Twilight” and “Red Riding Hood,” it seems that director Catherine Hardwicke is determined to get back to the indie grit with which she made her name, with films like “Thirteen” and “Lords Of Dogtown.” Over the past year she’s aligned herself with a handful of projects including the provocatively named book adaptationThe Bitch Posse“; a boxing biopic with Noomi Rapace attached; and the erotic thrillerPlush” with Evan Rachel Wood. And now another project has landed on her slate that has nothing to do with vampires or werewolves.

ScreenDaily reveals that Hardwicke is lining up “Diamond,” a gangster pic set in 1960s London. And that’s about all there is as far as details go. Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, who teamed on Halle Berry‘s failed Oscar bid “Frankie & Alice,” are penning the script. It’s still early days, but if everything pulls together, a 2013 shoot is being eyed. At any rate, it does mark a potentially nice change in gear for Hardwicke, but we’ll see if it coalesces.

For now, Hardwicke is busy casting up “Plush.” Co-written by Hardwicke and Artie Nelson, this is a thriller set in the seamy world of the L.A. music industry that the director says will be “pushing the envelope.” And especially after two tweenage tales, we’re eager to see Hardwicke letting loose again, and look forward to seeing who else is coming on board.
