Sundance Breakout Filmmaker Cathy Yan To Helm Harley Quinn Spin-Off Film Starring Margot Robbie

This is far from controversial to say, but “Suicide Squad” is just a bad movie. Plain and simple. However, there’s no denying that one (and maybe the only) bright spot in the film was the performance of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. And since the film’s release, fans have been clamoring to know when they’ll get to see more of the bat-wielding, crazy anti-hero.

According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, we are one step closer to seeing the character lead the way in a new, untitled film from director Cathy Yan. The film, which is completely separate from the previously announced “Suicide Squad 2,” is said to be based on the “Birds of Prey” comic book series that is best known for featuring a variety of female heroes saving the day, but featuring Harley Quinn.

Yan is a relative newcomer to the industry, with her feature film debut, “Dead Pigs,” premiering earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival. That film, which stars “Deadpool 2” and “Atlanta” star Zazie Beetz, received, generally, great reviews. That being said, going from a small, indie Chinese film to a huge, big-budget superhero romp is a massive change. But if you look at Marvel Studios’ success with their recent crop of directors, they seem to be employing a similar strategy of hiring young directors and guiding them through the process.

The details surrounding the film are scarce, but with Robbie’s breakout role in “Suicide Squad,” it’s clear that this “Birds of Prey” adaptation is definitely a Harley Quinn film. It would also be a great way to launch new female-led franchises, considering the comic book series is known for featuring prominent female characters.

Now, we just have to keep our fingers crossed that the Juggalo Joker, played by Jared Leto, is far, far away from this film.
