'Girlhood' Filmmaker Céline Sciamma Working On A New Film With 'BPM' Actress Adèle Haenel

Even though she hasn’t received as much recognition in the US, there are not many filmmakers out there that have had as great of a young filmmaking career as Céline Sciamma.

The French filmmaker burst onto the scene as writer and director of the 2007 film “Water Lillies,” which was a breakout hit at that year’s Cannes. Since then, she has two more critically-acclaimed films under her belt, including 2014’s “Girlhood,” which again earned Sciamma some awards-recognition. Now, we have learned that Sciamma is going behind the camera again for a new film, her fourth as director, and she’s bringing along a “Water Lillies” actress to star.

According to a report by Cineuropa, Sciamma is prepping work for the upcoming film “Portrait de la jeune fille en feu.” The film follows an artist commissioned to paint a wedding portrait on an isolated island in Brittany. The filmmaker says she seeks to “portray the presence of a past love, and the long-term resonance of this past love within us, which goes some way to compensating its loss.”

To help bring those characters to life, Sciamma has brought on actress Adèle Haenel to star. Haenel also became a household name in French film with the release of “Water Lillies.” The actress was nominated for a Cesar Award for her performance in that film. Since then, she’s won two Cesar Awards for her performances in 2014’s “Suzanne” and 2015’s “Love at First Fight,” respectively. And earlier this year, the actress was nominated for a 5th time for a Cesar for her work in the amazing film, “BPM (Beats per Minute).”

The report says that Sciamma is planning on beginning principal photography in October, to be completed in December. As you might expect, that means there’s a chance we could see the premiere of “Portrait de la jeune fille en feu” at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, where, no doubt, all eyes will be on the duo of Sciamma and Haenel.
