We are mere days away from the release of Charlie Kaufman’s next feature film, “I’m Thinking of Ending Things.” And while many are hoping the first live-action film from the director in more than a decade will lead to a busier schedule for the filmmaker in the future, Kaufman isn’t so sure that will be the case.

Speaking to Variety, Kaufman was asked about the future of his directorial career (he’s already working on new scripts for projects he likely won’t helm but more on that in a bit). And though he’s excited about the release of “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” on Netflix, Kaufman admits that he’s not too concerned if there is or isn’t another feature in his future.
“I’m getting up there” in age, he said. “I haven’t made a movie in 10 years, so I said I’m going to make something I want and not worry if this will lead to another job. If I get to do it again, it’s gravy for me.”

As mentioned, just because he may not have another directing gig lined up, that doesn’t mean Kaufman is sitting around with nothing to do. As we reported recently, he’s already revealed that he’s writing a script for a project titled “Memory Police,” which will tackle the world of dreams. Not much is known about the status of that project other than he’s writing it for Ryan Gosling’s production company. And in addition to that, he’s also scripting an HBO series titled “IQ83,” based on Arthur Herzog’s book of the same name, about a virus that causes stupidity (oh that sounds awfully relevant, huh?).

But as Kaufman said, right now all eyes are on “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” and the reception that film receives. With a cast including Jessie Buckley, Jesse Plemons, David Thewlis, and Toni Collette, people are expecting big things. And if the feature does live up to expectations, perhaps Kaufman will get that golden ticket to make whatever his creative mind thinks up next.
In the meantime, however, at least we know he is still keeping busy on other projects.
