Got a Tip?

‘Charlie’s Angels’ First Look Images Show Revamped Spy Team In What Is Being Called A “Continuation” Of The Previous Iterations

After the popular ‘70s series and blockbuster films in the early-2000s, it appears that Sony is ready to bring “Charlie’s Angels” back to audiences with a new look, courtesy of the three new actresses signed on to work for Charles Townsend’s spy agency. And now, thanks to the folks at EW, we have our first look at the upcoming “Charlie’s Angels” sequel. That’s right, the new film isn’t a remake or reboot, but instead, a sequel of sorts.

The report says that the new “Charlie’s Angels” will be a “continuation” of the classic ‘70s series and ‘00s films, but will be more contemporary and different than ever before. This time, the spy agency is global, and director Elizabeth Banks explains why.

“If you were rich in 1976, you only got richer,” Banks said. “Charles Townsend is richer than ever, so he’s grown the business into a global spy agency.”

This new version of the franchise stars Kristen Stewart as Sabina Wilson, who is described as “the hard-partying, highly skilled wild card.” K-Stew is joined by Ella Balinska as Jane Kano, the “muscle” of the group and Naomi Scott as Elena Houghlin, an MIT-trained scientist.

“It was important to me to make a movie about women working together and supporting each other, and not make a movie about their romantic entanglements or their mother they don’t call enough,” the director said. “When I’m at work, I don’t talk about those things. I get on with my job. It felt important to do that for the Angels, to treat them with the respect their skill set demands.”

So, what makes the 2019 ‘Angels’ any different than the decades-old TV series and severely-dated films? Well, according to Banks, the inspiration for the tone and style of this new “Charlie’s Angels” doesn’t come from those sources (I mean, obviously, they are an influence), but instead, Tom Cruise and his string of hit “Mission: Impossible” films.

“We talked a lot about [the ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchise],” Banks revealed. “Those films work best when the team is together, when Ving Rhames is in it, and Simon [Pegg] is in it, and Rebecca Ferguson. That sensibility really matters to me.”

We’ll have to see how Banks (who also stars in the film as one of the three Bosleys, joining Patrick Stewart and Djimon Hounsou), Stewart, Balinska, and Scott bring it all together when the film hits theaters on November 15.
