Alas, gone are the days of Melissa Joan Hart, a wisecracking cat, and lighthearted fun on ABC; now is the era of the gritty reboot, and it turns its eye to Westbridge, Massachusetts.
After Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa spun the Archie Comics characters into the wildly popular murder mystery “Riverdale,” he looks to do the same with the iconic teenage witch, Sabrina. “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” does away with the whimsy of its earlier incarnations and plants itself firmly in the realm of horror, as Aguirre-Sacasa’s run on the comic series did a few years ago. Now, the first footage for the series has dropped, and it certainly lives up to its title, with an atmosphere that feels more John Carpenter than John Hughes.
Originally intended to be a spin-off of ‘Riverdale,’ ‘Sabrina’ became its own entity after being picked up by Netflix, which aims to replicate its crossover “Stranger Things” success, especially since the latter show doesn’t return until sometime next year. “Mad Men” actress Kiernan Shipka stars as the titular witch, alongside Miranda Otto and Lucy Davis as her aunts Hilda and Zelda and Ross Lynch as Harvey. Michelle Gomez, Chance Perdomo, Jaz Sinclair, Richard Coyle, Tati Gabrielle, Adeline Rudolph, Abigail Cowen, Lachlan Watson, Bronson Pinchot and Gavin Leatherwood round out the Westbridge residents.
