“Avengers: Doomsday” is the next big event film hailing from Marvel Studios and The Russo Brothers. One of the big gimmicks they’re highly banking on is having Robert Downey Jr. as Victor Von Doom (the major villain of the flick) and having Chris Evans back as Steve Rogers after a self-appointed retirement to leave the mantle for Anthony Mackie‘s Sam Wilson (Old Man Rogers handing Wilson the shield in “Avengers: Endgame” leading to his own Disney+ series and “Captain America: Brave New World“).
Over the weekend at Fan Expo Boston (via ComicBook), Evans gave some minor insight into what audiences can expect for his grand return as Steve Rogers in “Doomsday,” and it sounds like the time-traveling supersoldier is heading back into the ringer again, as you might imagine given the grim undertone looming with the arrival of Doctor Doom as the big bad. The actor said Rogers has a “brutal” arc in the sequel, while also exploring his character’s “nature and values.”
“The Russos love beating up Steve Rogers. Their favorite thing to do is to just beat the crap out of him. To them that’s what makes a hero, and that’s someone who gets punched so many times but still gets up,” Evans told the eager crowd at Fan Expo Boston.
What we’ve gathered from the minor footage that has been shown publicly is that when Rogers goes back in time to be with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell is back, too), they seemingly end up having a child together, although we suspect these teases from Evans (having a brutal arc) suggest things don’t go well for the newly formed family unit. It remains to be seen whether something tragic has happened to either Peggy or their unnamed child, who might grow up to have powers of their own.
Another theory making the rounds online from fans is that Rogers could be forced to turn heel for RDJ’s Doom, or is a more dastardly variant from the Multiverse. We’ve seen some thinking that the evil version of Rogers, Hydra Steve/Supreme Hydra, could be who this Rogers might be, although being able to wield Mjolnir in the trailer footage may have debunked that off the bat (only those who are worthy can even lift it, let alone hold and use it). All that said, there is a good chance that Rogers going back in time to be with Peggy could have started the Multiverse incursion event to begin with.
Only time will tell what conflicts are on the horizon for Evan’s Rogers or what has drawn him back to help out Thor, but we suspect that might end up teased in upcoming marketing materials as more trailers and spots are expected leading up to “Avengers: Doomsday” arrival in theaters on December 18.
