Got a Tip?

Christian Bale Says He Eyed Role In ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story,’ Explains Why He Doesn’t Watch Superhero Movies

Outside of the “The Dark Knight” trilogy with Christopher Nolan, Christian Bale hasn’t been particularly interested in blockbuster movies. Still, the pull of The Force can be hard to resist. Last summer, reports circulated Christian Bale was in the mix for the mentor role that ultimately went to Woody Harrelson in “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” However, the actor wasn’t just a name on a wishlist. As he tells Happy Sad Confused, he actually toyed with making the movie.

“Yes, [it was] very tempting. I not only love the films going back to my childhood but also have a very long relationship with Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall because they did ‘Empire of the Sun‘ many years back. There was discussion, [and] I hope there will be future discussions,” he said.

Bale goes on to add that he’s a “huge fan” of “Star Wars” as well as his kids, but he doesn’t elaborate why he ultimately decided it wasn’t right for him. However, the actor probably spared himself some headaches given the exit of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, with Ron Howard jumping in and taking over filmmaking.

Perhaps, though, the reason Bale didn’t sign up to swing a lightsabre (or whatever) is his general disinterest in tentpole pictures. Yep, the man who played Batman in three movies, can’t really be bothered with superhero movies anymore, and hasn’t been keeping up with either the Marvel or DC cinematic universes.

“I have not [seen Ben Affleck’s Batman]. Yes I’m interested [in seeing it], my son seemed like he was really interested, but then I realized he just wanted to see the trailer and that was it—I tend to go see films that [my kids] want to see,” Bale said. “I have to confess I’m not a huge superhero film fan. People seem surprised at that, I don’t know why. I’ve not seen any of the Avengers films or any of those films at all. I hear they’re very good, but I’m quite happy just hearing they’re very good.”

Same, Chris, same.

Bale’s latest movie, “Hostiles,” is now playing in limited release. [via Collider]
