Got a Tip?

Christopher McQuarrie Talked About A Potential ‘Superman’ Film With Henry Cavill

To be perfectly honest, the current status of the DC Universe films is a mess. After “Wonder Woman” surprised many, with its amazing box office and critical acclaim, fans thought that perhaps the DCU films were saved. Then, just several months later, “Justice League” came and took a big steaming crap all over the shared universe and threw everything into chaos. What was supposed to be the film that finally set the DCU on a profitable course ended up being the worst-performing DCU film at the box office.

So, now we have a DC film slate that is full of rumors, speculation, and unannounced titles that may or may not tie into the established continuity. All original grand plans for the franchise are completely thrown out the window. That leaves characters like Superman in a state of limbo. But maybe not forever.

In an interview with Comicbook.com, writer-director Christopher McQuarrie talked about his upcoming film, “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” which just happens to star Superman himself, Henry Cavill. And in that discussion, he dropped some interesting tidbits about discussing the hero with Cavill and how he has been rumored as being in contention to helm a film featuring Superman:

“Henry Cavill knows what it would be like. We had a lot of time hanging out on set, and Henry’s a huge fan of Superman. I can’t help but talk story to people, so he told me his take on Superman and I thought it was really great, and I gave him my two cents. The tweet you’re referring to is somebody asked ‘Would you do it?’ and I said ‘Hey, they know where to find me.’ Nobody’s asked, but you know…”

Does this mean that McQuarrie is “in talks” to direct a ‘Superman’ film? Of course not. However, if we were working at Warner Bros. and we see this quote, we’re running to the phone to give him a call. Superman should be the heart and soul of the DC Universe films, and has been perhaps the franchise’s biggest victim. Maybe someone like McQuarrie could be the filmmaker to steer the universe back on track and give Superman a film that’s worthy of the character for the first time in four decades.

He definitely couldn’t do worse than “Man of Steel.”
