There are only a handful of filmmakers working today that make films that are worthy of being shown on 70mm. Leading the way, in most people’s minds, would be Christopher Nolan. The director is known for his incredibly beautiful films. And to celebrate the 10th anniversary of one of his best works, Nolan is finally getting the full 70mm treatment.
Warner Bros. announced today that “The Dark Knight” is getting a special one-week re-release in select cities and will be shown in 70mm. Today actually marks the 10th anniversary of the blockbuster’s release that many consider the greatest superhero film of all time.
According to Deadline, “The Dark Knight” 70mm re-release will be shown in four cities: AMC Citywalk in Universal City, CA; AMC Lincoln Square in New York; AMC Metreon in San Francisco; and the Ontario Place Cinesphere in Toronto. Tickets for the showing will go on sale Friday.
Nolan made headlines earlier this year for his work “unrestoring” another landmark film — “2001: A Space Odyssey.” This 70mm version of the film was shown in theaters nationwide and had its premiere at this year’s Cannes. The “unrestored” ‘2001’ was a big hit in it’s re-release, and probably was a contributing factor to “The Dark Knight’s” 70mm release.

“The Dark Knight” is also perfectly suited for the IMAX 70mm treatment due to the fact that Nolan famously was one of the originators of using the format in a major release. Major portions of the Batman film were shot using special IMAX cameras.
And for those who may have been in a coma over the last decade, “The Dark Knight” was released in 2008 and became a cultural phenomenon due to Nolan’s incredible filmmaking and a career-best performance from the late Heath Ledger, who won a posthumous Oscar for his work.
