Darren Aronofsky Talks Nolan's 'Dark Knight' Trilogy And Says How His Version Would Have Differed

Welcome to #FlashbackFriday, where we look at past moments with filmmakers, actors, etc. and highlight something in cinema history that’s fascinating, amusing, perhaps something you never knew or have seen, you name it.

If you’re a fan of comic book films, you’re probably aware that filmmaker Darren Aronofsky has been linked to a few different superhero films throughout the years. At one time or another, the director has been attached to a ‘Wolverine’ film, which he eventually pulled out of, and even “Man of Steel.” However, with the current state of the DCEU and particularly the unknown status of who’s going to play the character, fans are left to wonder what the filmmaker would have brought to the table with his version of Batman.

In this week’s #FlashbackFriday, we go back to an interview Aronofsky gave the Empire podcast where he talks about his flirtation with the Caped Crusader, and ultimately how his version of ‘Batman’ would have differed from the now-legendary “Dark Knight” Trilogy by Christopher Nolan.

“I love superhero films,” says the filmmaker. “I got really close on a few of them, but it just hasn’t worked out.”

He goes on to describe how he worked with comic book writer Frank Miller on a couple different scripts for ‘Batman’ but ultimately, the project never came to fruition. But Aronofsky does talk about how his version of the famous superhero would have differed from Nolans.

“I think Nolan’s version is exactly what the studio wanted. I think I was much more of a gritty feel is what we were going for,” he explains. “Eventually I got to make ‘The Fountain,’ that was the film I really wanted to make. I just chose to pursue that.”

Grittier than Nolan? That would have definitely been interesting to see. Plus, with a mind like Aronofsky’s, you have to assume that it wouldn’t have been your run-of-the-mill superhero outing. As we know now, Matt Reeves is pursuing his own series of ‘Batman’ films, so sadly, it doesn’t seem like Aronofsky is going to have his shot anytime soon.

But fans will obviously continue to hope to see the director give his take on the genre eventually.
