Got a Tip?

Christopher Nolan Doesn’t Refute The Idea Of A ‘Star Wars’ Project In The Future

Christopher Nolan continues to up the ante, in terms of sheer spectacle, with each new film he directs. Right now, the filmmaker’s name is synonymous with IMAX and larger-than-life storytelling. And he’s already dipped his toes in franchise films with the beloved ‘Dark Knight’ trilogy. So, you might imagine the filmmaker could be interested, in the future, in trying out another franchise film to provide a bit of his proven blockbuster filmmaking style to something like, say, “Star Wars,” right? Well, that might be the case. Or maybe not. You see, Nolan is pretty cagey when the idea of a “Star Wars” film comes up.

In a recent game show-style interview with Hugo Décrypte, the topic of “Star Wars,” amongst various other discussions, was brought up. And given the full chance to completely deny any interest in making a film about the galaxy far, far away, Nolan decides to… pass. Hmmm.

You see, the interview entered a section where there was a speed round of questions. Just a bunch of questions, and all Nolan has to do is respond with either “yes,” “no,” or “pass.” When the topic of making a TV show is brought up, the filmmaker said, “No.” When he was asked about the idea of returning with a new superhero film, Nolan replied with “no.” So, you see, the filmmaker is perfectly fine with refuting ideas if he knows it’s not in the cards.

But when the question of whether or not he’d be interested in making a “Star Wars” film was asked, Nolan said, “Pass.” Not a “no.” Just a “pass.”

Now, don’t get me wrong, that doesn’t mean Nolan is hiding news that he’s secretly developing a “Star Wars” film with Lucasfilm. Honestly, it doesn’t actually seem as if Nolan’s filmmaking style, which is all about practical effects, mixes well with the studio’s rampant use of CGI for everything. But hey, let’s not forget Lucasfilm also is making two seasons of “Andor,” which just got nominated for a huge Best Drama Series Emmy and is one of the most critically acclaimed “Star Wars” projects in decades. And what better way to reignite interest in “Star Wars” on the big screen than with Nolan? That alone might be worth the $200 million or $300 million it would cost to bring the filmmaker’s “Star Wars” vision to life.

That said, this is all pure speculation based on Nolan’s simple “pass” reply. But when given the option of a clear, unambiguous “no,” the filmmaker did decide to add a bit of ambiguity to the situation, which itself is interesting. So, while it’s not likely, there does seem to be an infinitesimal amount of hope that a Nolan “Star Wars” film could be in the future. We’ll just have to wait and see.
